葛

とても美味しいくずまんじゅうの事を書いたら、アメリカ人の友達のSteve Boucherが、葛はアメリカでは侵略的外来種だと教えてくれた。そして調べてみると日本から持ち込まれたらしい。日本に住んでいると日本の生態系を狂わせつつある外来種だけに注目してしまうが（例えばブラックバスとかアライグマとか）、なるほどそれは双方向であり、世界中で問題は同じなのかと考えてみれば当たり前のことに気づかされた。さらに調べてみると、葛は世界の侵略的外来種ワースト100であるらしい。世界を見る視点が広がるとはこのこと。ちなみにSteveは俺がカヤックでコロンビア川下りにチャレンジした際、その話を聞きつけて会ったことすらない俺のボンネビルダム迂回をサポートしてくれた人である。

Steve taught me that kudzu is one of invasive plants in North America although it is an ingredient for delicious Japanese traditional sweets. It broaden my horizon. In the one aspect, it is an endemic species, but in the other aspect, it is an invasive species, vice versa problems in the world. Incidentally Steve is a wonderful friend who supported me for a detour of Bonneville Dam during my challenge of kayak down the Columbia River although he knew of me trying it but never met me.
