Brand-new Kayak

This is a my brand-new kayak, Heron, ordered for this expedition and
picked up at Feathercraft in Vancouver Canada, who is most reliable
adventure kayak manufacturer in the world. I very appreciate that all
member of Feathercraft and Shiro gave me warm welcome, and a whole day
time and space for giving me an instruction of kayak.

これは今回の遠征のために注文した、僕の新しい組み立て式のシーカヤック
（ホールディングカヤック）、ヘロンだ。世界で一番信頼の置けるアドベン
チャー用のホールディングカヤックを製作するフェザークラフト社に、シアトル
からレンタカーを借りてカナダのバンクーバーへ受け取りに行ったのだ（その後
でケネウィックに移動）。フェザークラフト社の皆がとても暖かく満面の笑みで
迎えてくれて、丸々一日の時間と場所を、この新しいカヌーの取り扱い説明のた
めに割いてくれた。さらに幸運なことに、琵琶湖湖畔でフェザークラフトの代理
店をしているグランストリームの大瀬さんがたまたま二年ぶりにフェザークラフ
トを訪問していて（明日日本に帰るという）、僕に丸々一日を使って極めて丁寧
にこのカヌーの取り扱い方を説明してくれた。説明だけでなく、僕がその場で頼
んだ仕様変更にも対応してくれた。

ザ・ケネウィックマン・エクスペディション、5日目

昨日、スタート地点となるアメリカのワシントン州ケネウィック市に、レンタカーで到着した。しかし、準備と出艇の基地として長期滞在しようと目星を付けていた川岸のＲＶパークに行ってみると、近くに出艇できる河原が見当たらなかった。しかたなく代わりの場所を探すが、見付からぬままに日が暮れてしまった。川岸のほとんどが、キャンプ禁止の公園なのである。
　
公園の駐車場で夜を過ごすが、もしかしたら何処にもテントを張れず、出発すらできずに遠征が終わるのではと不安が募り、疲れているにもかかわらず、なかなか寝ることが出来なかった。
　
そして今日も、キャンプ地を探すが一向に見つからぬまま、ヨットが百艇以上係留されたケネウィック港に辿り着いた。駐車場の舗装修理を指示していたマイクに、「何処かにキャンプ場はないか」と話しかけてみた。マイクは港を管理する同僚に僕を紹介してくれて、なんと港内にテントを張り滞在する許可がもらえた。規則には反するが、特別に遠征をサポートしてくれるというのだ。
　
使われていない平屋事務所の裏手の芝生に、テントを張る。夕日が沈むコロンビア川が眼前に広がる。人の往来はなく静かだ。シャワー室も、電源も使わせてくれる。
　
彼らの優しさに守られて、日本を発ってから初めて、安らかな気持ちで眠りについた。

The Kennewick-Man Expedition, DAY 5

Yesterday, I had come to City of Kennewick, Washington, U.S.A. from where I was going to start my expedition. But, when I drove to a RV park along the Columbia River which I had marked out for a long-term stay base camp for preparations and putting a kayak out to the river, I could not find any dry riverbed where I could put the kayak out. Therefore, there was no other choice, I had driven to look for an alternative space, but night fell before I could find. Almost all land of riverside was parks where are permitted only day camp.

I spent a night in the rent-a-car at a parking space in a park. Although I was exhausted, I was hard to get to sleep. Because I felt uneasiness, which I cannot pitch a tent anywhere and then my expedition is going to be finished despite that I did not even start the expedition yet.

And also today, I drove to look for a camping space. While I had not been able to find any camping space, I drove into Port of Kennewick where more than 100 yachts moored. And then, I asked to Mike Melia who directed to fix a pavement of parking area, “Do you know any place where I can pitch a tent and put a kayak out to the river?” Mike kindly introduced me to his co-workers who administered the port, and then surprisingly they gave me a permission to set up a tent and stay in the port. They told me, that it deviated from an established rule, but specially they would support my expedition.

I pitched a tent on the grass behind an unused single-story office. The Columbia River the sun sets on was outspread before the tent. It was so quiet without flow of people. They offered me a shower room and a power plug.

I fell into a restful sleep for the first time after leaving Japan under protection of their kindness.

ザ・ケネウィックマン・エクスペディション、3日目

シアトル空港でレンタカーを四日間、躊躇する余地なく七百九十ドルで借りた。

初めての右側通行に戸惑い、信号ルールが分からず後続車からクラクションを浴び、時差ボケで睡魔に襲われながら、一人車を北へと走らせた。休みなく続けた遠征の準備で、体には疲れが溜まっていた。しかし、そんな緊張と疲労を吹き飛ばすように、右手に連なるカスケード山脈を白く覆う雪は、僕の心を踊らせ、カナダへといざなう。国境を越え、昨夜バンクーバーに辿り着いた。



朝八時、注文したカヤックを受け取るため、製造元のフェザークラフトを訪ねた。

創業者のダグ、メールを交わしたテレサ、そして従業員の皆が、満面の笑みで迎え入れてくれた。ダグが、「あの計画の君か。会いたかった」と、相好を崩してくれた。

また幸運なことに、日本でカヤック店を営む大瀬さんが、たまたま滞在していた。有難いことに、丸々一日かけて、日本語で、カヤックの複雑な分解組立手順を説明してくれた。

見知らぬ海外で、未知の冒険を行う。経験と想像の範囲を超えている。興奮と不安が、大きく漠然と広がっている。そんなテンションが強く張った神経を、客として以上に暖かく熱心に接してくれる皆の気持ちが、解きほぐしてくれた。

The Kennewick-Man Expedition, DAY 3

I rent a car at Seattle Tacoma international airport for 4 days for $ 790, of which I didn’t have a room for hesitation in paying such cost.

I drove to the north alone, getting confuse for keep-to-the-right which is opposite from Japan, came under horns from following vehicles since I was unclear a rule of right-turn traffic signal, feeling sleepy strongly due to jet-lag. In preparation for the expedition continued without a break, fatigue had accumulated in the body. But, as if it drove away such tension and fatigue, white snow covering the Cascade Mountains that stretched out to the right hand made me excited, and invited me to Canada.



At eight in the morning, I visited Feathercraft to receive a sea-kayak I ordered.

Doug who is founder, Theresa who exchanged e-mails with, and all of employees welcomed me with big smiles on their faces. “You are the man of that plan! I wanted to see you”, Doug said and grinned widely. I was so glad.

And fortunately, Shiro who runs a kayak shop in Japan just happened to stay there. Thankfully, over a whole day, in Japanese, he explained me complex assembly and disassembly procedures of the kayak.

I was going to do an unknown adventure in unfamiliar foreign countries. It was beyond the scope of my experience and imagination. I felt a broad and vague sense of excitement and unease. Feelings of everyone, who treated me warmly and eagerly more than as one of customer, released such my tension.

Entering Canada

l have entered into Vancouver Canada by a rent-a-car. Ocean in left car window where i will kayak has made me exited.
レンタカーでアメリカのシアトルからカナダのバンクーバーに陸路入国。これから漕ぐ太平洋沿岸が車窓の左手に時折姿を見せて、僕をわくわくさせる。
